Post Operative Care for Suction Lipectomy (Tumescent Technique)

You have undergone major surgery. For a speedier recovery, please act accordingly and follow these instructions.

  1. Anesthesia: You may experience a sore throat post-operatively. This is common after general anesthesia and will clear up in a few days.

  2. Nausea: If you have any nausea, take only clear liquids until the nausea has subsided. You may then resume a normal diet.

  3. Rest: Bed rest is recommended for the first 24 hours. You may be up for meals and to the bathroom with assistance.

  4. Pain: You may have discomfort for several days. Use the prescription medication as directed to control any pain. Or, extra strength Tylenlol may be sufficient. Do not use Ibuprofen, Motrin , Advil or aspirin - they may cause bruising or bleeding.

  5. Adverse Reactions: If you experience any adverse reactions such as increased swelling, redness, heat and sudden fever (101º or above), please call our nursing staff for advice.

  6. Smoking: Smoking delays wound healing. Do not smoke for eight weeks postoperatively. Avoid secondary smoke if possible.

  7. Driving: Wait at least 24 hours after you have stopped taking pain medication to drive a car or operate machinery.

  8. Take your medications as directed on the prescriptions.

  9. The garmet is important following liposuction. Wear the garmet as instructed. All garmets or binders should be loosened periodically 93 or 4 times a day) and then reapplied to avoid wrinkling or creasing of the skin that may come form extended wear. If adhesive foam is placed on your skin beneath the binder, this can be removed in the shower 24 hours following the surgery.

  10. Expect bruising, discoloration and swelling in all areas treated. This will decrease during the first 3 weeks. Swelling will continue to decrease for up to 3 months. Do not allow sun exposure until all bruises have resolved.

  11. Areas of firmness can develop in areas liposuctioned. They resolve and soften with time, usually a few weeks to a few months.

  12. Expect significant red-tinged drainage from your incisions. This is normal and will help lessen swelling and speed up your recovery. Drainage may continue for 1 to 3 days.

  13. Plastic sheets, drop cloths or absorbent pads should be used to cover bed and chairs because of your drainage. Please change these frequently.

  14. You may want to bring a plastic cover or bag to cover the seat in the car for your ride home.

  15. Areas that have undergone liposuction may be numb or tingly. The sensation will return to normal within a few days or weeks following the procedure.

  16. Minimize any activity such as lifting, stretching or vigorous exercise until approved by your doctor. You may return to work and drive an automobile after a short time.

  17. You will feel some lumpiness under the skin for up to four months following the surgery.

  18. No diet drinks.

  19. You should be urinating every 2-3 hours, urine should be pale yellow or clear, if not, increase water intake.

  20. You should not be dizzy or queasy upon standing, if you are, increase your water intake.
